In mass housing Paul de Vroom was always fascinated in crossing the border between design by architects and self design. In the concepts of the Schutterstoren and Australië-Boston the individual freedom in layout was stretched to the limits of regulatory obstacles. The freedom obtained here was well appreciated by the residents. In Squares another sensitive aspect in architectural design is addressed: Individual freedom in the facade! Here a clear concrete grid is introduced as binding element of the facade. Large freedom of choice is offered for the squares within this grid. Therefore a set of contrasting options is made available to the future residents. To playfully clarify the principle the developer introduced the game ‘Design your own facade’ at an event on the building site on December 17th.
