C&H art space is proud to announce “solidified time”, a solo exhibition by Carine Weve.

“MEANING: REPEAT IT SIX TIMES MORE AND IT DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING ANY MORE. EVAPORATED”

For this solo exhibition Dutch artist Carine Weve presents her new series of conceptual drawings, realized over the last year. These works are the result of Weve’s artistic search for the essence of meaning in relation to time and monotonous actions, elements that become the core of the images she presents. Starting from repetition, executed with extreme precision, Weve realizes intriguing color and black-and-white drawings.
Weve starts building up her drawings from the center according to fixed and specific patterns which become subject to simple rules. These rules, added together, form a new structure. Some images appear random at first sight until the underlying structure is revealed. In others the structure seems to dominate, until you detect the hitches that cannot be grasped.
By applying rules in different ways, the artist shows how little squares, numbers, letters and symbols, meticulously repeated, form structures that are different for every drawing. Essentially, every drawing is a possible center of an expanding surface that takes on literally unimaginable dimensions. If Weve were to complete the drawings according to her own set of rules, this would result in surfaces defined in terms of square light years. Square light years?
Time is an important friend in the process: hour after hour, day after day, week after week, she uses pen and pencil desiring to catch a glimpse of meaning. Every drawing becomes a fragment of time, solidified.
Carine Weve lives and works in Rotterdam. She studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Art) in The Hague. Since 2006 she has taken part in several solo and group shows worldwide: she exhibited her work in Beijing, in New York and in The Netherlands, resulting in purchases by international art collectors. In 2010 and in 2013 she was commissioned works in public space in the cities of Rotterdam and Mechelen.
