With ‘Estanterias III y IV’, or bookcases III & IV, the transformation of the apartment in Gracia finally comes to the end (for the time being). The bookcases were desperately needed because of Paul de Vroom’s constant desire for books about Barcelona, Vila de Gracia and Catalunya.

Estanteria IV is situated on the main floor which falls within the ‘Red Concept’. The red-concept means that on this floor the colors may vary as long as they belong to the family of red colors. The idea originated from our first experience with Spanish building: it is impossible to attune two elements with the same color red. The strong solution is an unendless series of different colours red unifying all elements on this floor.

The final bookcase was the toughest. Bookcase III, on roof level, only had to comply with the limited space it was in and the result could be real abstract and white. The IV had almost impossible restrictions: in the two adjoining walls two completely contrasting window frames. Above, a double inclined roof with a hefty, protruding crossbeam. All in all, no corresponding measures. The solution was introducing all divergent measures into the bookcase in order to come to a dynamic, spaceship-like design which is executed in three colors of red in accordance with the ‘Red Concept’. Of course the books, dvd’s and cd’s all fit.
